Anti-Vaccine Movement: An Ongoing Battle Should children’s health be at risk for the greater good of community health? The news today is full of tragic stories about complications of vaccine use and there have been injuries from the beginning of vaccine use due to incomplete data on the side effects. The injuries have also brought about changes in the way vaccines are manufactured. The Georgia State Government requires citizens to receive vaccines in order to attend day care, go to school, and work at certain jobs and each state has its own mandates as well. The only way to get around the vaccine is to claim religious or medical exception. For either of these exceptions, one has to have a notarized affidavit for religious exception or a†¦show more content†¦They know that the vaccines are harming children and some adults but think the benefit is worth the sacrifice of the few. Health officials caution that no vaccine is 100% safe, but they sponsor studies that conclude the benefits of vaccines far outweigh the risks. Vaccines are approved after just a few short years and the research is sponsored by vaccine manufacturers and public health bodies, who have financial and bureaucratic interests that could impede the objective study of vaccine safety (Delong 55). Public health officials and vaccine manufacturers should not be allowed to pay for research the vaccine or do the clinical trials. The government should be responsible for safety studies since the taxpayers are paying for the claims. The research should be unbiased with studies that show the negative effect of vaccines on healthy individuals. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the Food Drug Administration (FDA) have the greater good of the country at stake and both have an agenda to vaccinate against devastating disease. If the public loses confidence in the vaccines, they would not be vaccinat ed. Imagine what would happen if the vaccines were unavailable for some reason. The activity went really well as both parents and children showed engagement and mutual enjoyment. I have observed high levels of reciprocity between parents and children who were in tune with each other, maintaining eye contact, exchanging facial expressions and being responsive to each other (Brazelton et at, 1974). Younger children (16-26 months) showed high levels of fascination and energy, showing curiosity about the puppets and Makaton signs used (visual learners, puppets SEN children). During the activity, children developed their fine and gross motor skills, rocking and bouncing along with the rhyme, involving their fingers, clapping, holding puppets. Older children (22-36 months) copied actions and joined in with singing, maintaining focus and concentration of what is being asked. I supported and challenged children’s thinking by asking them open-ended questions and ‘scaffolding’ children’s language (Vygotsky, 1978). I was struck by cognitive abilities of older children who were able to match animals. Adult-child interaction supported child’s ‘sustained shared thinking’ and extended children’s learning during the activity.
